Bayesian Brains without Probabilities

Bayesian explanations have swept through cognitive science over the past two decades, from intuitive physics and causal learning, to perception, motor control and language. Yet people flounder with even the simplest probability questions. What explains this apparent paradox? How can a supposedly Bayesian brain reason so poorly with probabilities? In this paper, we propose a direct and perhaps u...

Triangulations without pointed spanning trees

Problem 50 in the Open Problems Project of the computational geometry community asks whether any triangulation on a point set in the plane contains a pointed spanning tree as a subgraph. We provide a counterexample. As a consequence we show that there exist triangulations which require a linear number of edge flips to become Hamiltonian.

Dynamic Update with Probabilities

Conditional probabilities Pi(φ | A) describe how agent i’s probability distributions for propositions φ change as new information A comes in. The standard probabilistic calculus describing such changes revolves around Bayes’ Law in case the new information A is factual, concerning some actual situation under investigation. But there are also proposed mechanisms in the literature that deal with ...

Graphs without spanning closed trails

Jaeger [J. Graph Theory 3 (1979) 91-93] proved that if a graph has two edge-disjoint spanning trees, then it is supereulerian, i.e., that it has a spanning closed trail. Catlin [J. Graph Theory 12 (1988) 29-45] showed that if G is one edge short of having two edge-disjoint spanning trees, then G has a cut edge or G is supereulerian. Catlin conjectured that if a connected graph G is at most two ...
